Sellout Watch:
Cro-magnon axeman, bowhunter, and defender of all-things-gruntworthy including the right to bear arms, bare chests and bare your barren intellect, Ted Nugent, has sold his only good song -- "Stranglehold" -- to Dodge for use in their latest Dodge Trucks commercial. Somehow, though, I can picture "the Nuge" riding shotgun with the pathetic caricatured meatheads who play foil to the calm cool contractor-type star of these ads as they try to keep up with the power and prestige of the vaunted Hemi engine.

Dero v. Adams
This is like over a month old now, and nearly two weeks beyond ripe for posting. But, just in case you haven’t heard about this… enjoy.
Jim Derogatis, current music crit for Chiccy G’s other paper and former “scenester” for my hometown weekly The Elmhurst Press (back when I was a young music fan hooked on hair metal, the Beatles and AM-radio-dominated Cheap Trick), wrote a not-so-glowing review of a Ryan Adams gig back in December. It seems Mr. Adams read a copy of said review, took exception, phoned Dero and left a vitriolic voice mail on his answering machine. The tape (Real Audio version here) made its way to the web and hilarity ensues! To wit (from the horse’s mouth):

can see why you are so bitter, but please, this is music...its about giving..........i hope you see the beauty and magic of music as a language where there are no wrong and right words or notes...
these are our storys......and they are meant to be heard.............
good luck jim/ art is the voice of god and he is always speaking and he is never wrong.
Charlie Brown and Co. cover "Hey Ya". This is good.

VH1 Classic is the shit.
I try to tune in to "We Are the Eighties" now and again because I know that they'll play a block of good videos at some point in the hour. They're really good at digging up the obscure. However, obscure sometimes means suffering through the Glass Tiger or T'Pau videos. But here's my remedy for coping while the crap videos play: put the TV on mute and play your own CDs. All too often you get that weird synergy between what you're playing and what's displayed on the screen. When it really meshes, it's downright thrilling, regardless of whether intended soundtrack is Warrant or the Steve Miller Band. Anyway, I was expecting this sort of thing when I switched over to VH1 Classic this evening. CD was already going...
But tonight I got lucky.
VH1C treated me to a solid half hour* of Smiths videos with commentary from Johnny Marr. Now I wish I could tell you that Mr. Marr said something really profound about the Smiths years or the breakup or whatever, but in all honesty, I can't remember what he said. The important thing is the video tracklist. Here's what I got to see:
Panic
The Boy with the Thorn in His Side
Sheila Take a Bow
Girlfriend in a coma
This Charming Man
Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before
Shoplifters Unite
How Soon is Now?
So they didn't play my all time fav, "There is a light..." but a few months ago I had the pleasure of seeing it on said channel. One of these days I'll be able to put into words what that song means to me and how it affected me the first time I heard it and what it was like seeing Morrissey (too young to see the Smiths do it) play that song live but until then... I'm telling you this channel is the shit.
*For the most part, their commercial interruptions are few and far between, and more often than not they are VH1 self-promotions.

Deviated Septum 2003 CDR Box Set
Nine Ten* discs all told. A ridiculous amount of music sampling the year that was twenty oh three. While the whole of the compilation may include a few overlapping cuts, each disc was individually and lovingly tracked as each of us saw fit to satisfy our own standards of variety, balance and flow -- thus making each journey unique. Any and all of the following CDR’s are available for trade, sharing, or other such aural perusal –- please send me an email at the contact address listed in the left-hand column (vekmar AT msn.com) for further details. Last night I was in Cincinnati, home of the Afghan Whigs. The Whigs are no more...
(I wrote this bit of hyperbole, AMG regurgitation, and jarring blend of run-on/fragmentary sentences about a year ago. It's not very good, but it came from the gut and considering it's the Whigs we're talking about, that's really what counts. Besides, I think I made my point.)

In Praise Of...
I was listening to Duran Duran's Rio the other day -- top to bottom pure titties, anyway -- and sometime after "Save a Prayer" scribbled myself a note to worship at that altar way more often. Don't question, however, simply queue up your deliverance.

Deviated Septum - Best Albums of 2003
As Nikhil said to me when he submitted his list, “This year was an embarassment of riches, Kev.” Well said, Nik.
What follows is the cumulative ranking of our twenty favorite albums of the past year. A common theme among the contributors to the list is that so much of the ranking is dependent on mood or memory or just the general timing of writing ‘em down. All of our lists were in flux up until the moment they were posted and even as I type this I wonder if I shouldn’t have re-ordered my top three. Alas, this is the nature of the year-end list and part of the reason they’re so fun to make in the first place and then dissect later; they become a snapshot of our tastes at this exact moment in time.
One caveat: A few albums listed on the individual rankings were actually released in 2002 (Out Hud, Ms. John Soda, Justin Timberlake, Giddy Motors). There were reasons for this, but they are too numerous to list here.
Just as we did last year, Deviated Septum will be offering a CDR compilation of this year’s favorite songs. Expect a multi-disc series this time, with offerings from each contributor and maybe even a combination mix as well. (Tracklists to be posted sometime next week.)
Thanks for reading.
1. Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It in People
2. The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
3. Menomena - I Am the Fun Blame Monster
